Checkfront Labs

Checkfront • 2019-2019 • My role: Product Designer, User Experience, Research, Visual design, Prototyping & testing, facilitation.

Checkfront Labs is an initiative that turned into a hackathon project. Labs was an environment where developers could express themselves and their ideas and showcase new features to merchants.

The Challenge

Often, features and ideas are under a lot of red tape. With Labs, developers are free to experiment, to be wrong and make mistakes.

Team & My Role

Facilitated a workshop to bring together people and ideas and to organize our thoughts for Checkfront Labs. Creating an environment where developers could test out their latest features in a sandbox environment, and here merchants could give us feedback on new features. I was the Product Designer, and I led the research, visual design, user experience and testing.

Phase One

Gather

Sketches

Rapid sketch iterations were used for rapid discussion, ideation and user flows, and we opted for a lean approach which emphasised this. It created early alignment, sparked tons of great ideas, and created a strong sense of ownership across all members.

User Flows

I mapped out the user journey to simulate what paths users needed to take including onboarding such as email and step-thru guides on the app.

Phase Two

Build

Wireframes & Mockups

As the design direction was established, I began creating the structure and hierarchy of the design, as well as the aesthetic treatments.

Prototype

I worked closely with our developer Ben Alison to bring our designs to life as a working low fidelity prototype. Communicating ideas face-to-face and discussing constraints and possibilities was an effective way of collaborating together.

pHase Three

Teachings

Session Recordings

I conducted session recordings with the merchants and this validated the hypothesis and identified areas of opportunity for the design. These live recordings represented a reliable hybrid qualitative and quantitative data set and validated the idea. They were shared with the team at demos with great success.

Outcome

It was extremely rewarding to work on a project that generated such measurable impact for both the developers and merchants. It validated a big opportunity to continue to iterate and extend this initiative further. We had great success with merchants, and it felt normal and easy to use. Checkfront Labs was used within other hackathon projects.
